It is called "Freedom of speech" for a reason. I personally believe that it is unacceptable to ban or challenge books, no matter what the content. Parents have a right to choose what they do or do not want their child reading; however, that does not give them a right to challenge or ban a book from a library so that no other children have the opportunity to read it. When it comes down to it, gay/lesbian relationships, sex, drugs, and explicit language have become an everyday occurrence. Whether you turn on the television, the radio, or the internet, we come in contact with it all the time. So if it acceptable to be on TV and the web, why should books be banned or censored when they contain this type of content? The book, Running with Scissors contains a large amount of profanity, explicit sexual content, and gay/lesbian content; however, I do not believe that it should have ever been challenged or banned. It was obviously made for a more mature audience, but like any other book, it should be available to anyone who wants to read it.
